December 22nd, 2008 by uncleweed

KK with a handful

The Phones for Fearless campaign is underway! We have a plan of action, the first phones are in hand, the bloggers are talking and we're ready for prancing through the snow with a sack of wintery libation to the good kids with extra phones to donate.

We'll be out and about Dec. 23rd from 1~4 to gather phones and spread cheer.

A few answers to the queries:

How do we get on the pickup list?

Send a message NOW via:

Can i come along?

Yes you can come along to help! Bring a rucksack and your media making device to capture photos and videos of the shenangins. Meet at Raincity Studios HQ at 10:30 to head out into the wilds of Vancouver to harvest mobile phones in rag-tag bands.

Jenn Lowther

Can i donate my phone without a power supply?

Sure. Coincidentally enough, Fearless City's trove includes many power supplies without phones - we'll pair them together for fun. Accessories, power supplies and batteries are all encouraged. Keep your SIM cards though we'll clear the phones first.

How about standard old office landline handsets?

Umm, we do like extra digital cameras but not other office equipment so much, we are hauling rucksacks so nothing heavy please ;-) But ... if you have something great, we'll make arrangements - whatcha got?

I am a DTES artist/resident or non-profit organization, how do i get my hands on a phone(s)?

Come to Fearless City's Wednesday meetings from 1-3 at Lori Krill Co-op, 65 W Cordova, to get peer training and find out how to get access to a phone and participate in Fearless City campaigns.

I am writing a blog post, uploading Flickr photos and videos, can i get some tags?

Sure, thanks, here's a copy and paste string to get you started: fearlesscity fearless dtes homeless artists donation cellphone phonesforfearless (or with commas) fearlesscity, fearless, dtes, homeless, artists, donation, cellphone, phonesforfearless.

Please add you photos to the FearlessCity Flickr group. Huzzah!

Kitchsper the Frosty Ghoul

October 28th, 2008 by antianti

Starting on Monday, November 3rd, Fearless City will get a BRAND NEW feature.  The continuing stories of KITCHSPER THE FROSTY GHOUL!  Some of you now reading this might have gotten the comic book already and are waiting for the next EXCITING installment.  You have but only part of the story.  I know, waiting is hard, but, dear readers, IT IS WORTH IT!  Every Monday from now to DOOMSDAY will have an installment.  This is indeed a proud day for Fearless City Media.

For those who do not know the background already, Kitchsper the Frosty Ghoul was born Mark Henry in 1890 and went to the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 with his parents.  While getting too ingrossed in the then new newspaper feature "The Yellow Kid" he was not watching where is was going and became a ghoul after being struck dead by a street car.

Media Democracy Day at the VPL on Saturday October 25th

October 26th, 2008 by AL

Yesterday I helped work at the Fearless/W2 table at the library. We were located at the Big Library, the one that looks like a Roman Ampitheatre and I always wondered why it was built that way.. I guess it attracts alot of public interest by the shape of the library.  Perhaps parents and their children get a sense of Europe right in our own backyards.

I arrived late with my two new laptops as I had abit of car trouble.  I had a late night, the evening before as I played a gig with my duo partner Jim. We're called Landslide and we mostly play Rock, Blues and Country. The older folks like to get up and dance in front of us reliving their childhood.  It's nice to see that happiness in people. Sometimes there's the odd drunk that comes up to us and starts yelling at us his requests for a particular song... sometimes we play and sometimes we don't... it depends if we have it on hand to refer to.

April came to film us play last night, and unfortunately, she got punched out by a fat drunk named Barney from behind who was bothering us all night... I guess when April ignored his drunk advances as she was filming us.. he felt ignored, got mad and lashed out at her...We got off the stage real quick and made the guy leave and April was really shaken up and in shock.. she was worried about the camera and it even recorded the whole scene on audio.. lots of shaky camera motion... But she's pretty tough and fearless.. she makes a good field journalist.. I guess her working in bars makes her pretty resilient.

The Fearless/W2 table was the first one you see when you walk in through the main doors.  Irwin had his laptop there already, and we set up my two laptops also.  There were two that were playing the W2 stories:Building a Legacy and one that had Movino set up with the Nokia N95 cameraphone... it is supposed to show live performance and live streaming over bluetooth.

APril films Glenn Nicholson and Tom Wright of the Foresters who put on the " Pumpkin Patch" event at Maclean Park

I filmed Glenn Nicolson and Tom Wright at
"Pumpkin Patch", a local annual event held at Maclean Park  by the Foresters in
partnership with DERA and Strathcona Community Centre.

In this video, Glenn and Tom speak with delight how they picked up the pumpkins from Felix Farms, generously donated by manager Peter Gachon with transportation provided by Burnaby Moving.

About 150-160
pumpkins were placed onto the field of Maclean Park, where neighborhood
children from the DTES could come by, pick up a pumpkin and do some carving.

Children had the opportunity to get face painted, do chalk drawings, or
even get sparkly colors and glitters sprayed onto their hair. Candy
bags were also given out and smiles and laughter were all around. :)
