HUM101DOCUMENTARIES PRESENTS
BLACK HISTORY FILM NIGHT
Carnegie Centre Theatre, 401 Main Street
Saturday, February 28, 6pm. FreeThe Road Taken (52’)History of Black Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways workers  Seeking Salvation (90’)Four centuries of Black churches in Canada Hogan’s Alley (32’)Vancouver’s Black historical neighbourhood and community.
For over 60 years, the Downtown Eastside – from Main Street to Campbell Avenue and from Hastings to Prior Street – was home to Vancouver’s only black neighbourhood. Like immigrants from all over the world, they arrived looking for a comfortable place to live, raise their families and develop businesses. They were prepared to work hard, but due to the unwritten racial segregation of the times, jobs and housing opportunities were limited. They faced the same struggles residents face today – the need for affordable housing, wages you can live on, dignity and respect. People didn’t have much, but what they had they shared and they looked out for each other. These films explore the black experience in Canada, and provide valuable insight into ways people can work together to strengthen community.
Produced in partnership with the DTES Heart of the City Festival
with support from the City of Vancouver Great Beginnings Program.
