Orality 2.0 digital storytelling

March 17th, 2009 by raincoaster

Orality 2.0 (March 2009 Podcaster/Vidcaster Meetup)

Wednesday March 18, 2009
at
6:00pm

La Fontana Café

101-3701 E. Hastings St.
Burnaby, British Columbia
Get Directions

People tell stories. Where our ancestors told stories around the fire,
contemporary storytellers are using iTunes and YouTube to continue our
storytelling tradition. Join us at the next Podcasters Meetup where
digital story teller James Chutter, fresh on the heals of his Northern Voice appearance, talks about stories, culture and technology.

Are you producing digital content? Come and hear about the long and
honourable storytelling tradition you're a part of and perhaps get a
few new ideas for attaining the next level! Do you want to produce
digital content? Come and discover the rich and diverse options you
have for realizing your creative vision!

James' presentation at Northern Voice was very well received and we're
pleased he'll be speaking at our next meeting at La Fontana Cafe.

Agenda:
6:00pm Meet & Greet/Introductions
6:30pm Main Presentation: Orality 2.0 by James Chutter

Orality 2.0:
Social integration into the Internet and the growth of online social
networks are changing the way we sit around the fire and share our
stories. James will provide insights into the evolution of the tool and
platform of online social media by, placing it into a historical
context, surveying its recent past and forecasting on its future
impact. This will be viewed in the context of how different
technologies affects the stories we tell from an oral culture, to a
print culture, to a technology culture and back to a Web 2.0 networked
culture.

James Chutter:
James’ activities and work includes working as a professional photographer, actor, film maker (Dean’s Honors grad of the venerable NYU Film School,) blogger, digital cultivator and most importantly the original Corporate Hipster. Amidst all this James has completed his masters of applied arts. His thesis
on the evolution of the oral storytelling tradition in a digital world
is a fascinating study of past and present modes of storytelling used
by society. He combines inspiration from fine art sculptors, and remix
DJs which he contextualizes within contemporary media theory and
current blogger buzz.

The Venue:
La Fontana Cafe is on the Vancouver/Burnaby border at Boundary and
Hastings, near the PNE. With easy bus access, it's 2 blocks east of the
Kootenay Transit Loop.

Sunday: SUPPORT THE POWER TO WOMEN BLACK MARKET - STAND FOR THE DTES!

March 6th, 2009 by raincoaster
End Police Violence

SUPPORT THE POWER TO WOMEN BLACK MARKET - STAND FOR THE DTES!

-----------------------------------
Sunday March 15th
from 1-3 pm
Vancouver Police Station
Main Street (between Hastings and Cordova)
-----------------------------------

All (including men) welcome!

Significant
street sweeps have been occurring in the DTES from increased and
aggressive ticketing for things like jaywalking to "illegal" vending.
As verified by the VPD itself, a year-end performance report shows that
officers issued 467 tickets for violations of the Safe Streets Act in
2008, compared to 202 tickets in 2007. Police officers also handed out
133 tickets for violations of the Trespass Act, up from 95 in 2007.
Tickets for city-bylaw infractions, including tickets for vending,
panhandling, and loitering, shot up to 439 tickets in 2008 compared to
247 tickets in 2007.

Leading upto the 2010 Olympics, such
measures are meant to 'cleanse' the neighbourhood and to intimidate
DTES residents through the use of no-go orders for "chronic offenders"
(i.e vendors/binners) and street checks by VPD Beat Enforcement Team
officers.

In response to this, the Power to Women group is
organizing an afternoon of "illegal vending" in front of the Vancouver
Police Station on Sunday March 15th, International Day Against Police
Brutality. We strongly encourage supporters and allies of the group and
of DTES residents who are facing this increased onslaught to please
come out and make your presence visible. We are standing together and
we ask you to come out and support the Power to Women "black market"
which will also help fund the groups ongoing activities! If you have
any items (crafts, artwork, clothing, books, appliances) to donate to
our "illegal vending" efforts, please bring them with you!

---------

Organized
by the DTES Women Centre Power of Women Group: We are a group of women
from all walks of life ho are either on social assistance, working
poor, or homeless; but we are all living in extreme poverty and are
dedicated to raising our voices and raising awareness about social
issues in our communities. Many us of are single mothers or have had
our children apprehended due to poverty; most of us have chronic
physical or mental health issues for example HIV and Hepatitis C; many
have drug or alcohol addictions; and a majority have experienced and
survived sexual violence and mental, physical, spiritual , and
emotional abuse. For indigenous women, we are affected by a legacy of
the effects of residential schools and a history of colonization and
racism.

Techforms W2 SAT collaboration
EXPERIENCE

Starting at 9PM PST on the night of March 6, 2009, the Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver will be connected live to SAT in Montreal via fibre optic cable and mobile camera operators streaming live footage to in-house projection screens at both locations. Produced and presented in-part by W2 Community Media Arts Society, the technology will involve the audience by allowing them to contribute live user-generated content to the visuals. The opportunity for live interaction between two cities across the country sets TechForms apart from the other three nights of the Midforms Festival, and from any other club night found in either city. This groundbreaking event will find VJs, DJs and their audiences intermixing and collaborating for one night.
